Cut the shaft with the pipe cutter and pull the wire thur the end you cut off. Feed the wire thur the head and cut to the lenght and splice them back in. Took me about 20 minutes. Remove the top cap, disconnect the motor wires from the control board, then remove the other part of the top half. Personally I'd tie a string to the motor wires and stuff them down below where you intend to make the cut.
